Pakistan at war with terrorists: Dr Tahir-ul-Qadri

[08th December 2009]

In the wake of terrorist explosions and suicide bombings in Pakistan and Afghanistan a leading Islamic scholar has issued a ‘Fatwa’ condemning the perpetrators and declaring that “Islam does not permit, under any circumstances, the massacre of innocent citizens, terroristic explosions and suicide bombings.” The 200-page religious verdict by one of the foremost Muslim authorities, Dr Muhammad Tahir-ul-Qadri declared suicide bombings and terrorism as totally un-Islamic.

Unfolding the background of his religious verdict during an overcrowded press conference in Lahore via video-link from Canada, Dr Qadri said that “a torturous wave of terrorism has been maligning Pakistan in particular and the Muslim Ummah in general for many years. It is evident that while the Muslims as a collective entity condemn, resist and fight terrorism, and are not ready to accept its remotest possible link with Islam, there are some extremists who are also seen supporting it. Instead of opposing and condemning it openly and downrightly, they confuse it, making it a hotchpotch.”

Dr Qadri, in his Fatwa booklet published in three languages, explained in detail, with particular reference to Qur’anic verses and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, that perpetrating attacks against innocent citizens, carrying out massacres, suicide bombings and the destruction of national assets and property “is absolutely against the teachings of Islam and that Islam does not permit such acts on any excuse, reason or pretext.” He added that “all these acts are grave violations of human rights and constitute kufr, disbelief, under Islamic law.”
Dr. Qadri appealed to all Muslim scholars, intellectuals, and opinion-makers not to concentrate on who these people are, who is behind them and why they are committing these acts. Whatever justifications they may give for their actions, they act against the teachings of Islam. They are in clear contravention of what Islam stands for. Their each action is premised on bringing harm to Islam and to the whole of humankind.

Dr Qadri stressed that “their existence is an open danger against the integrity of Pakistan and world peace” and urged that “the entire nation should dissociate itself from these elements, and condemn them in the strongest possible terms, unequivocally and with one voice.”
The Pakistani nation is in a state of war. It is the need of the time for Pakistan to form unity among its ranks at every level. The entire nation should stand behind their armed forces busy fighting a war for the protection of the lives of the innocent citizens, and securing national defense by eradicating terrorism.

He made it clear that his religious verdict was neither in support of the US and its allies, nor should it be taken as an approval of their policies in the region. In the same way, it did not support the disputed policies of the government of Pakistan and its unpopular style of governance and undemocratic attitude.
